The Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) in Biology at Southern Connecticut State University provides a direct pathway to a Master’s degree and initial certification for future educators with a Bachelor’s degree in Biology or a closely related field.

Science teachers play a pivotal role in developing critical thinkers and scientifically literate citizens. With STEM integrated into nearly every aspect of modern life, a strong foundation in math and science allows individuals to make informed decisions. Nearly two million new teachers will be needed over the next decade, and science remains a high-demand field, recognized as a “shortage” area.

At Southern, Biology MAT students prepare to be ambitious science educators, committed to helping students of all backgrounds engage with science concepts, participate in disciplinary activities, and apply their knowledge to real-world problems. Throughout the program, students collaborate with professors and scholars who are experts in their fields, building both theoretical understanding and practical teaching skills.  The 45.5-credit MAT in Biology includes opportunities to conduct research that explores the challenges of science education today. Upon completion, qualified candidates are recommended to the Connecticut Department of Education for their initial Biology 4–12 certification and will earn a state-approved Master’s degree. Applicants must already have a Bachelor’s degree in Biology or a related field, as this program is not for certified science teachers seeking additional credentials.
