The Louis Stokes Alliance for Minority Participation (LSAMP) is a National Science Foundation-funded program that provides academic support and specialized advising for students from historically underrepresented groups who wish to enter non-medical STEM professions.
Southern Connecticut State University will build a cohort of 20 - 22 underrepresented minorities (African Americans, Native Americans, Hispanic Americans, Alaskan Natives, and Native Pacific Islanders) interested in pursuing a career in STEM. Eligible majors include Biology (excluding the pre-med concentration), Biotechnology, Chemistry (excluding the pre-health concentration), Biochemistry, Computer Science, Data Science, Earth Science, Environmental Studies (the Coastal and Marine Science concentration), Mathematics, Physics, Psychology.
As an LSAMP scholar, students will participate in each of the following programs:
- A two-week paid residential summer bridge program, held in August 2024, focusing on success in mathematics and gateway STEM courses, as well as other academic strategies for success in the first year.
- A first-year seminar series given by a CSU professor or member of industry on a topic of interest to the students.
- A first-year learning community for the SCSU LSAMP scholars.
- Paid summer research with a faculty mentor after their first year.
- Peer mentoring and tutoring throughout their first two years.
- Connections with industry partners for internship opportunities.
- Support for travel to present research at local and national conferences.
