Basic Skills Testing Requirement

Applicants need to submit Praxis® Core scores in Math, Reading and Writing to satisfy the State of Connecticut basic skills competency requirement, OR meet the requirements for a waiver.

Students qualify for a Praxis Core waiver if they have:

An SAT score no less than 530 on the mathematics portion, and no less than 540 on the evidenced based reading and writing, taken within the last 5 years;
OR an ACT score of 21 or higher on the Reading subtest and no less that 21 on the mathematics subtest, taken within the last 5 years;

Note: Students who qualify for a waiver but do not have the Essay Rubric score, will need to take Praxis writing Test.

Admissions Essay

In a concise and carefully crafted essay, explain why you want to become a teacher and discuss two to three qualities of a good teacher. Provide support for each of these qualities by explaining how they affect student learning.

The essay must be typed using a Times New Roman or similar font, 12 point, single spaced, and two pages long (approximately 1000 words). The essay serves as a writing sample, so it is important to submit a carefully reviewed, coherent paper.

For Physical Education ONLY: Please submit the additional documentation required by your program: Documentation of professional conference attendance/participation.

For Physical Education ONLY: Please submit the additional documentation required by your program: Verification letter of 2 hours of volunteer/service work.

Please note that during the course of your program you will be required to complete a federal & state background check(s) for each Connecticut school district within which you may be placed. Any prior convictions revealed in your background check may prevent Connecticut school districts from accepting you for placements, practicums, and/or internships and may impact your ability to complete the teacher certification program. Prior convictions may also impair your ability to obtain future employment. Background checks are conducted exclusively by the school districts which will determine on a case by case basis the appropriateness of the placement. SCSU does not conduct, receive, review or engage in discussion regarding student background check results.

Basic Test Scores Acknowledgment
I understand that the scores for the basic skills test in Reading, Mathematics, and Writing are required for admission into the program. If this requirement is not met prior to admission, it will be added as a stipulation by the College of Education, and will need to be met within three (3) months.
